Ecopella is an environmental choir that sings about the beauty of our world and the struggle to protect it from exploitation and destruction. Founded in 1998 by musical director Miguel Heatwole, the choir serves the environment movement by providing activists and audiences with the opportunity of enjoying a very high standard of a cappella singing. The strong environmental message of Ecopella's Save-The-World Music encourages positive change in people's thoughts and actions and offers support to a wide variety of green organisations.

Ecopella originated in Sydney and we now have branches in the Blue Mountains, Illawarra, Canberra and the Central Coast as well. We have over 325 performances to our credit, embracing a wide range of events: benefit concerts, protests, campaign launches, community gatherings and folk festivals.

You might expect a choir that sings about the environment to be a gloomy ensemble, but Ecopella's sense of fun fills each performance with positive and satirical messages. Even when the mood becomes serious the beauty and solemnity of the music uplifts the listener. A lot of the pieces are original compositions and most of the arrangements are ours also. Stylistically our influences include folk, classical, popular songs, and occasionally jazz.

The choir always welcomes new members and opportunities to perform. Although we accept payment we often donate or discount our services to unfunded community organisations. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you would like either to sing with us or to invite us to perform.

We’re not your everyday choir
From our gear you can plainly see –
We are in many shades of green –
Diversity in harmony.

And as you will soon be hearing
Our repertoire’s different too -
In melody, rhythm and words,
We’re bringing a message to you

We gather to honour in song
The gifts of the planet we share
We bring you a warning, and hope
To move you to think, and to care

We sing of the air that we breathe
Of the richness of soil and seas
We sing in praise of wild wonders
The rivers, the oceans, the trees.

Some songs may move you to laughter
And others may move you to tears
But though we will entertain you
Our message will also be clear

We sing of the ways people live
Of those who belong to the earth
And those who seek to exploit her
In profit they measure her worth.

We sing of the beauty around us
But we fear for the planet we share
And hope that our message moves you
To action that combats despair

So sit back, close your eyes, come away
With our voices so strong and fine
We invite you into our world
To save it, one song at a time!
